In serious need of an editor. I started reading the first book in the Millennium Trilogy, and at seventy pages in, I have to say, I’m not impressed. People keep raving about it so I figured it high time to check it out. Unlike, say, Twilight, this book at least promised not to be unmitigated crap. [...] Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, that is. More specifically Sherlock Holmes. Though I know I read a couple stories in high school (The Adventure of the Speckled Band stands out), but aside from what the speckled band was, I couldn’t tell you much about my overall impression of the writing and Holmes in general. So, in need [...] I used to get in trouble for reading too much when I was growing up. Car rides, company…nothing stopped me from getting through a book that had me hooked. Particularly with the company issue, since family was coming over to pretty much visit with Mom, was it so horrible if I remained seen but not [...] I have a new bone to pick with Ms. Mitchell. She is guilty of one of the biggest sins any writer can commit: telling when she should be showing. I’m not saying that telling doesn’t have its place from time to time, but showing is far more engaging. The first chapter of Part II is Scarlett [...] I finally read up to where Scarlett’s heading off to Atlanta to visit Aunt Pittypat and Melanie, where the real fun begins. If Scarlett had an ounce of sense when it came to love, she’d forget Ashley, and even Rhett, and go for Melanie. Next to Rhett, I think Melanie’s the only person who sees right [...] Yes, I’m making my way through this at a snail’s pace. Shut up. Despite the long weekend, I only read for part of the day on Saturday and a bit Monday to get through Scarlett’s confrontation with Ashley in the library…stopping just when Rhett finally makes his presence known because I’m damn well savoring that scene. I’m [...] Right, remember how I keep saying I know I’ll have moments where I’ll want to shake Scarlett for being an idot? Ellen’s taken her place. I got through chapter three last night: Ellen and Gerald’s backstories.
I have to keep reminding myself that these were different times, a different culture…might as well be a different planet. [...] I’m up to chapter three—Scarlett and Gerald have had the land talk and finally returned to the house to find Ellen heading off to baptize Emmie Slattery’s baby. Chapter three begins with Ellen’s backstory. My inner English major is rearing her head with regards to Ellen O’Hara, how important she is to Gerald, Scarlett, and the [...] I’m not usually this slow of a reader, but when having to continuously drag myself out of the editorial mindset and reading snippets during lunch, it’ll be a long haul. Unless it grabs me and I’m motivated to read at night. So anyway, I’m up to where Scarlett and Gerald have their little chat on the [...] I mentioned in my Five Books post that I need to revisit those key books one of these days. I decided to put up or shut up and picked up Gone with the Wind for the first time in close to a decade maybe. I honestly don’t think I’ve read it since I graduated high [...] |
